North Texas Academy

A Distance Learning Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a GED program, or do I receive a high school diploma?

This is not a GED program. You will earn a high school diploma from an accredited private school in Texas — North Texas Academy.

Can I go to college after finishing this school?

Yes. 85% of our students go on to college. You will need to take college entrance exams, just as any student would, and from those exams the college will recommend what classes you need to take. Most of our students start off at a community college and then transfer to a university.

In this program, can I go at my own pace?

That would depend on which program you enrolled for.

The Traditional Extension Program requires a student to mail their work to the teacher every two weeks and stay on schedule, in order to complete high school in the required amount of time. The Fast Track Program and the Shortened High School Diploma Program allows two years to complete the studies, at your own pace.

How will I know what I am expected to do on each subject?

You will receive a checksheet (an assignment sheet) for each subject. It will show you exactly what is due and when (date) it is due. Everything is well organized and very simple to understand. If you have any questions, you may call and we will be happy to help.

What can I do if I really don’t understand the work? Can I get help?

Yes. You may call and a teacher will help you. We want you to do well in school and be successful. We want to help you.

What if the work is too difficult?

For North Texas Academy high school students in grades 9-12, the curriculum is all on the high school level. However, if a student has been in special classes or has had a problem in school academically, the curriculum will be adjusted to fit the student’s needs.

When will I graduate?

If you are interested in this school, you will complete an application form and mail it in with the application fee of US $25.00. Once your application is received, a program will be completed for you, showing what courses you will take and when you will graduate.

Does this program take the same amount of time as a traditional school to complete high school?

Usually not.

In the Fast Track Program and the Shortened High School Diploma Program, you have two years to complete your studies, which is plenty of time to do the courses.

If you enroll in the Traditional Extension Program, and for example, you are just starting high school with us as a ninth grader, it usually takes 2-3 years to complete all of the courses. You can attend all year round if you want, or take time off during the summers.

Can I do this extension program and later return to a public or private school?

Private schools have various rules and policies. We have found that for the most part, private schools will accept these courses and they will work with the student who has attended a school such as this.

Public schools also have various rules and policies. Some public schools will not give you credit for courses taken from our program. Some public schools simply want to test the student to see what level they are on and will decide from that point whether to accept and give credit for a course taken or not.

If you are considering returning to a public school, you should get in touch with the school and let them know what you are planning to do. The public school will need to know that we are an ACCREDITED private school. Find out, from the school, what will occur and if they will accept the credits.

Can I join the military after I’ve graduated from this school?

Yes, but just as you should if you were going to return to a public or private school, you should get in touch with the branch of service that you will be joining and let them know the type of school you are attending and find out if there will be any considerations on this.

I don’t live in the U.S.A. Can I apply for this school?

Yes.  You need to be fluent in the English language.  We have students all over the world.

What’s the rule in this school if I were to use drugs?

You will be expelled! The same goes for any criminal activity, such as committing a felony. You will be expelled! We have a no tolerance policy about any drug use and/or criminal activity

What type of students attend North Texas Academy?

Good students! They are drug-free and ethical. They want to graduate from high school with a diploma, not a GED, and for various reasons, they want to attend school as an extension student, studying at home instead of the conventional way in a building.

What does it cost to attend this school?

That depends on which program you select. Once we see the application, we can let you know exactly how much it will cost.

What is my first step to get started?

Decide which program you want:

  1. The TRADITIONAL EXTENSION PROGRAM

  2. The FAST TRACK PROGRAM

  3. The SHORTENED HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM

  4. The PARENT IS THE TEACHER PROGRAM

Once you have decided which program you want, complete the application for that particular program.

The Traditional Extension Program and the Fast Track Program have the same application form. The Shortened High School Diploma Program has a separate application form.

Once you have completed the application form for the program you want, mail it to:
